Most drivers `support lower drink-drive limit'

Most drivers `support lower drink-drive limit'

Drivers want much tougher penalties to be applied to people caught drink-driving, according to a survey by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

Four out of five think cars whose drivers persistently reoffend this way should be seized and sold or crushed. Around half also think the same should happen to drivers who are several times over the limit.

The survey, carried out via the organisation's website, also revealed that 60% support a reduction in the drink-drive limit to put it in line with much of continental Europe, at 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The current UK limit is 80mg.

Just over half (55%) support a graduated system of punishment reflecting how far over the limit an individual is proven to be, where the fines for being over 50mg per 100ml but lower than 80mg would be lower than the existing charges.

However, almost half of survey respondents admitted to having a drink while driving, within what they believe was the limit.

Almost four in five (79%) said a lower limit would not affect their enjoyment of a night out. Also, 84% said the lower limit would not affect their plans to go out.

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: "The support is there for tougher treatment of drink drivers.

"Not only do the majority want a lower limit - they also want tougher punishment for those that break the law, especially the worst offenders who present the greatest danger to other road users, their passengers and themselves.

"Our poll shows a desire to see more effective drink drive levels as well as much greater consistency of enforcement, prosecution, and sentencing, which reflects the level of danger associated with drinking drivers."
